What do you dream of accomplishing, but are starting to lose hope and give up on? As moms we spend so much time and energy investing in our family that personal goals are hard to include in our lives, both in our day to day routines and in our hopes and dreams of what is still going to be part of our life post-children.
Most of us have more than one unrealized goal, maybe we want to renew a hobby we enjoyed before children, or stay up to date in our career field, or exercise and get back in shape.
For many of us one personal goal is weight loss: to lose that baby weight so many of us pack on while a wonderful new life grows inside us, sometimes no matter how much we try to be healthy while pregnant. One of my main personal goals for this year is to lose the baby weight from my fourth and final son that I gave birth to last September, and I am bound and determined to have a success story to share with you by the end of the year. Anticipating that event (celebrating in the fall) and the often asked question “how did you do it?” I want to post from time to time about the details surrounding weeks that were successful.
To that end, I am happy to share that I lost 1 lb this week! And at the risk of boring you, here is my food log from the week. My strategy was to focus on whole foods, eating plants as much as possible. I have tried not to eat any processed foods, fast food, junk food, or sugary desserts. In order to find balance with the demands on my time, I have found it useful to buy microwavable rice and low calorie freezer meals. I also find my willpower holds up best if I have a piece of a 70% dark chocolate bar most days and give in and indulge a small portion if my family is having a dessert and I really want it. I’ve also found calorie counting is too time consuming for my life right now, but logging the kinds of food that I eat provides just the right amount of awareness and accountability.
My food log for this past week:
Old fashioned oatmeal with honey, homemade yogurt with strawberries
7 Layer dip and chips, sweet potato
Carrots and hummus
Brown rice, zucchini and squash, corn on the cob, peanuts that we roasted in the shell
Instant low sugar apple oatmeal, banana, peanuts, Brown rice with freezer meal of stir fry chicken and veggies, carrots and hummus, piece of dark chocolate, salad and pasta at a restaurant, grapefruit
Banana, apple oatmeal
Chinese takeout chicken and vegetables with fried rice
Carrots and hummus, strip steak, half a donut, peanuts, grapefruit
banana, low sugar instant oatmeal, brown rice with frozen meal of stir fry chicken and veggies, peanuts from shell, piece of dark chocolate, prosciutto wrapped mozzarella sticks, carrots and hummus, corn on the cob, homemade greek salad with steak
Instant apple multigrain, peanuts
Grapes, leftover pasta, frozen mixed veggies, sweet potato
Frozen low calorie pasta meal, homemade greek salad with steak, grapefruit

Rosemary potatoes with ketchup, frozen mixed veggies, sweet potato
Salsa, guacamole, chips, strip steak slices, small square of cheesecake

Note: I’m still working exercise into my regular schedule. I have been getting it in occasionally, but I did not exercise at all this week.
